RESILIENCE AND RESISTANCE

FLOOD RESILIENCE
AND RESISTANCE

Flood resilience is how well people and places are prepared for flooding, so they can better protect their locality and respond to and recover from difficult or challenging situations. It’s about reducing the impact of flooding if water did get inside your property, aiming to minimise any damage and the time it takes to get back to normal.

Flood resistance is about reducing the risk of water getting into your property in the first place. It’s buying you time to move possessions from ground level, as well as to get people to a place of safety if a flood is expected.

What is property level resilience?

Property level resilience simply refers to the actions you can take to help you make your property more resilient to flooding and drought.

What resistance and resilience measures could be considered?

Flood Resilience

  • Seal floors and install resilient skirting

  • Raise and store white goods, kitchen units and vulnerable items off the floor

  • Raise electrical sockets

  • Secure pump-and-sump systems to extract floodwater

  • Use concrete to fill under-floor voids or delay flooding from the ground

  • Install a flood resilient kitchens

  • Install internal doors that can be easily moved in a flood

  • Understand your risk, and create a flood plan so you know what to do in a flood

Flood Resistance

  • Install items which have been designed with flood resistance in mind, such as flood boards and doors, air brick covers and non-return valves.

  • Ensure the fabric of your building is sound (pointing is well maintained below ground, cable entries are sealed, etc).
