infiltration STRUCTURES

so what is An infiltration STRUCTURE?

This is a catch-all term for structures that capture surface water runoff and allow it to soak and filter into the subsoil layer, where it can return to the water table.

  • Soakaways and infiltration trenches can be constructed in many different ways and used in various forms. The water filters through the structure and soil before entering the water table. They can be linked together to drain large areas such as at the side of a highway or housing developments.

  • Rain gardens are small depressions with vegetation to manage water runoff for example using rainwater that comes from roofs.

  • These features should be installed in areas where the ground conditions allow water to soak into the water table.

INFILTRATION structure example

01. Depression promotes the capture and infiltration of surface water

02. Plants in the basin should be ABLE to withstand dry or wet periods

03. Can be used for amenity and recreational use

04. Can be designed to blend in to the existing environment

05. Soils can naturally filter pollutants

06. low maintenance

HOW DOES PERMEABLE PAVING HELP?

permeable paving refers to a surface THAT water CAN PENETRATE.

These pavements are commonly used on driveways, car parks and walkways to reduce surface water flooding because water is able to drain away. Water drains into the soil underneath or it can be held in a structure under the paving for reuse or delayed discharge, all whilst pollutants are removed as it travels through the layers.
