Reclaiming
the Rain in WATTON

Woodton is a beautiful village in South Norfolk, which, like many villages, faces difficult challenges as it feels the effects of climate change.

flooding in the centre of the Village

Watton is a beautiful village in Norfolk which, like many villages, faces difficult challenges from changing weather patterns. In the future it’s likely Woodton will face both flooding and drought, so it’s important to be ready to manage the effects.

Recent flood risk studies of Watton found there’s risk to residential and commercial buildings from both surface water and river flooding. This means that planning ahead to increase resilience in the village is very important, and also raises fantastic opportunities to find new ways to use flood water.

Water Scarcity

As our climate changes, the country will face increasing challenges in managing our water resources, and this is important for Watton too. Whether looking at fresh water supply to buildings, or water dependent habitats in the environment, it’s vital to protect what we have and improve it wherever we can.

SCHOOLS

Watton Junior School

Watton Junior School Watton Junior School is in the centre of the town and has historically suffered from pluvial flooding. Surface water has in the past entered the foul system and then flowed into the Junior school, after which the school has had to close due to the amount of water entering the school internally.

Watton Infant School

Watton Infant school is located close to Watton town centre and whilst has no stated record of flooding to date, sits in a flood risk zone. This therefore makes the infant school beneficial to increase flood resilience.

Wayland Academy

Wayland Academy has significant surface water ponding around the site and a surface water system that is overwhelmed on medium to high rainfall events. The drainage system is a mixture of surface water sewers and soak aways.

Problems and Challenges facing WATTON

‘‘In the past, during the late autumn and early winter, a strong Downpour took the topsoil off a newly ploughed field in Groton, a neighbouring village. the water carried mud, stones and other debris downhill, along the road and right into the centre of the village, causing much damage.’’
