Reclaiming
the Rain in WOODTON

Woodton is a beautiful village in South Norfolk, which, like many villages, faces difficult challenges as it feels the effects of climate change.

flooding in the centre of the Village

Thompson is a beautiful village in Norfolk which, like many villages, faces difficult challenges from changing weather patterns. In the future it’s likely Woodton will face both flooding and drought, so it’s important to be ready to manage the effects.

Recent flood risk studies of Woodton found there’s risk to residential and commercial buildings from both surface water and river flooding. This means that planning ahead to increase resilience in the village is very important, and also raises fantastic opportunities to find new ways to use flood water.

Water Scarcity

As our climate changes, the country will face increasing challenges in managing our water resources, and this is important for Thompson too. Whether looking at fresh water supply to buildings, or water dependent habitats in the environment, it’s vital to protect what we have and improve it wherever we can.

SCHOOLS

Woodton Primary School

Woodton Primary School has suffered with surface water entering the building on low rain fall events in multiple locations. Furthermore, there is also significant surface water ponding on the playground as well, which is due to some poor management of surface water. Being a very small village, useable space in the school is a premium.

Problems and Challenges facing WOODTON

‘‘In the past, during the late autumn and early winter, a strong Downpour took the topsoil off a newly ploughed field in Groton, a neighbouring village. the water carried mud, stones and other debris downhill, along the road and right into the centre of the village, causing much damage.’’

WOODTON From the air

The Woodton community was hit with significant surface water flooding in the winter 2020 floods.

There were multiple internal floods. The reason for the flooding was due to the watercourse not being able to handle the excessive flows, which resulted in several locations where the watercourse breached and finally used the carriageway to flow into the village and cause internal flooding to properties. The night of the flood the fire crew were called to try and pump the water away along with an environment agency pump.
