Pingo Re-establishment

Reclaim the Rain worked closely with a local landowner and the Norfolk Rivers Trust to re-establish eight natural pingos. To supplement this work, five leaky dams were installed and with a cattle crossing point on Thompson Stream.

This idea first came about through engagement workshops with Thompson’s Community Working Group (CWG) in a discussion about the pingo trial which runs throughout Thompson. The landowner shared an interest in doing something with a section of land that has been designated for environmental use and had previously had natural pingo formations within it. Historically these features were drained and subsequently buried due to past agricultural practices of growing arable crops.

Whilst the main objective for this work was to bring back the pingos and restore the land to it’s natural state, Reclaim the Rain wanted to encourage and document the wider environmental benefits too; creating a habitat for local wildlife to return to. This scheme brings together flood risk and water resource benefits, as well as social and ecological opportunities too.
